- ★ PERSONALITY: Kousuke Nitoh doesn't let anything get in the way of his happiness. Not even a magical monster that lives inside him and threatens to eat him if it doesn't get its way. To him, the flip side of any crisis is an opportunity. The reason he has continued to function, despite the fact that there is a magical creature inhabiting his soul and waiting to consume him, is because of his incredible optimism. He might complain... He might complain a lot, when his impulsiveness and relative naivete get him into trouble, but he never lets it get him down. This is why he's an ideal candidate for the position of a magic-using Kamen Rider, because the only way to survive with a Phantom inside you is to never give in to despair. With Chimaera, the dangers are doubled, because if he doesn't keep Chimaera fed with the magical power of other Phantoms, he'll be consumed himself. But even at times when he's as close to that death as possible, such as when a college professor stole his belt without realizing the consequences, he would still not allow Haruto to kill Chimaera to save him. This crisis led to the greatest opportunity he had yet seen, the ability to manifest Chimaera's power in real life through the Hyper Beast transformation. In that way, most of Kousuke's life as a wizard revolves around risk and reward.
He often has trouble figuring out when people aren't on the same page as him, especially when he's talking about things that he's enthusiastic about. For instance, when he first arrived, he was so bound up in himself that he didn't realize that Haruto's magic worked differently than his own, and continued to talk to Haruto as if he also ate Phantoms. He's an archaeology student, and enthusiastic about history and the way that people lived in days before. He's fairly knowledgeable about the subject, too, though it doesn't usually come up. He's obsessed with mayonnaise, to the point where he puts it on all of his food and tries to evangelize for it at any opportunity, to the point of mayobombing other people's food on several occasions.
He's stubborn, occasionally delusional, and just a touch vain and dramatic. He has ideas about his world that may not be true, but that he nevertheless continues to fervently believe, like his naming Haruto his eternal rival despite their indubitable if rocky friendship. He tends to just try to drag people along with his point of view, even if they don't seem to be entirely interested in it. Despite all this, he is at his heart a good person, and one who's willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of the world and the people he cares about. Though he has an overwhelming passion and drive, he is willing to delay satisfaction and do what’s right even if it he doesn’t want to, if lives are on the line.
Kousuke doesn't consider himself a hero, though he's done heroic things. Though he throws himself headlong into any dangerous situation he sees in order to protect the people he cares about, he just considers that the thing he's got to do. At the start of the series, he was more selfish, his focus was almost entirely on his own survival. This issue was exacerbated when a Phantom called Medusa came and explained to him that Phantoms come from Gates, and there are a limited amount of them. Being fairly gullible, he believed a Phantom and went ahead assuming that Gates would be important to his future survival. However, after encountering Haruto, who explained to him that in order to birth a Phantom, a Gate has to die, he has changed his mind. Though he wasn't sure whether to protect Gates, or allow them to turn into Phantoms to ensure a continuing supply of food for Chimaera, Haruto taught him to focus on saving the lives he can today, and not worry about the lives that might be lost tomorrow, even if one of them is his own.
When a Phantom, Legion, with the power to invade human bodies to kill Gates’ (and wizards’) inner phantoms arrives and uses his power to destroy Haruto’s Phantom, Dragon, Kousuke steps up to fight Legion to stop him from killing civilians. The important part is the interaction between him and Haruto. When Haruto, despite his inability to use magic, tries to go off to fight Legion, Nitoh interrupts him and tells him that he’s not a wizard anymore and only a wizard can defeat a Phantom. The important part is not that he puts himself forward to fight Legion, it’s that he makes sure to tell Haruto that he feels guilty for not having been able to stop Legion to begin with, that he will take on the responsibility of defeating him to make up for his failure. And though Haruto hasn’t listened to his non-wizard friends when they tell him not to go after the Phantom without his powers, he listens to Nitoh. The two of them have an understanding as wizards, and Haruto has taught Nitoh to take on the responsibilities of protecting the people of the city.
Two other people whose interactions with Kousuke provide important insights into his personality are his best friend Tsucchi, who comes to Tokyo in order to make his fortune and finds that he’s a Gate with Phantoms coming after him; and Yuzuru, a young man who finds a mentor in Kousuke and eventually is forced against his will to become a wizard as well. Tsucchi and Kousuke were best friends in high school, and they have very similar bombastic personalities. However, when Tsucchi’s focus on making money puts him in danger, Kousuke is forced to crack down on him for his frivolousness, showing just how much he has (and Tsucchi hasn’t) grown to be responsible. This is also reflected in his interactions with Yuzuru, who is charmed when he sees Kousuke’s skill on a bike and asks to be taught to ride. When Yuzuru turns out to be a gate, and overcomes his despair, Kousuke demands that he be given the choice to become a wizard or not. Becoming a wizard is an important responsibility and Yuzuru is just a child. When Yuzuru decides not to become a wizard, Kousuke takes it upon himself to defeat his Phantom to take him out of danger from magic entirely. Unfortunately, the villain, Fueki, arrives before Kousuke has a chance, and kidnaps Yuzuru, forcing him to become a wizard against his will. Kousuke’s anger, grief, and frustration at Yuzuru’s kidnapping is a catalyst for his actions at the end of the series. He believes that Fueki shouldn’t be allowed to play with other people’s lives for his own ends.
This change in his focus is most clear through the final showdown in Tokyo, when Fueki has set up a giant magic circle in order to sacrifice the entirety of Tokyo to resurrect his dead daughter. Nitoh, as the only wizard not being used as a pillar sacrifice to start the ritual, is the only one who can save the day. But as an older type of wizard, an archetype, his magic is not powerful enough to overcome Fueki's. In the end, all he can do is destroy his driver and free Chimaera, though that may result in his death. Chimaera consumes the magic that has been freed by the ritual, and ends it. In the end, though Kousuke offers himself up freely, Chimaera chooses not to eat him, and escapes. But even though Kousuke is no longer a wizard, he still throws himself into fights with Fueki, and then Fueki's killer, the Phantom Gremlin, in order to save the people of Tokyo.
His change in outlook continues to be reflected in post-series events. He manages to find and bind Chimaera again, though his original plan was not to risk his life by making a contract with him. He was only keeping the belt around to study it. But when Haruto is confronted with Fueki's daughter, his beloved Koyomi, resurrected as another wizard in order to bring him to despair, he puts the belt on without a second thought for his own safety. He plans to defeat Koyomi in order to keep her from destroying Tokyo to force Haruto into despair, or allowing Haruto to despair by having to defeat her himself. He does this despite the fact that most of the Phantoms in Tokyo have been defeated, and his ongoing food source is no longer in any way guaranteed. This selfless act is emblematic of his change throughout the series from someone who is selfish and headstrong to someone who is willing to sacrifice for the greater good.
In the end, his continued survival is guaranteed with the help of mysterious fruits from another world that he and Haruto help save, ensuring his optimism remains undamaged. He can survive and keep people safe without having to sacrifice his life to do so, even if he’s fully willing to do it. He’s able to continue being confident that everything will work out.
- ★ ABILITIES: Aside from being a pretty good trick bicyclist and a grade-a rock climber, Nitoh is possessed by a magical beast, Chimaera, who gives him magical power in exchange for his promise to provide Chimaera with mana by defeating magical creatures. If he doesn't, then Kousuke will be the one devoured.
This magic is fairly powerful, and he's gotten used to rationing his mana fairly efficiently. He is able to add capes to his base form, which give him the powers of Chimaera's component animals. Chameleo cape gives him invisibility and the ability to use its tongue as a whip. Buffa cape gives him super strength and endurance. Dolphi cape gives him swimming abilities as well as healing. Falco cape allows him to fly and move with greater agility.
He also has a special ring called the Hyper Ring, which augments his strength and abilities with that of Chimaera inside him. He can manifest Chimaera in the real world using the Mirage Magnum, and shoot him at an enemy which permits Chimaera to eat them unassisted.
Though his abilities are strengthened by magic, his magic is largely physical and dependent on his abilities as a fighter. Except in Hyper Beast Form, he cannot attack with magical energies or elements such as fire and water. He is limited by his ability as a brawler, in that he cannot exploit elemental weaknesses, but he is also strengthened by his inability to be limited by elements.
